I, too, found The Sea difficult, even off-putting at first. But got through it and re-read it and enjoyed it more the second time through. It may be that in his serious writing he is something of a "writer's writer," perhaps in the vein of William Maxwell or Larry Woiwode.
Bob, I've only recently (last three years) read Maxwell. Loved all three, and there's another on my desk. Woiwode was a hero to the English department when I was at the University of Illinois, A recent alumnus, he was, made good. So I read a couple back then. They are still on my shelves, waiting to be re-read. Yes, they're writers' writers.
